Messe Frankfurt traces its commercial roots to imperial trade fairs first chartered in 1150, making it - by lineage - the oldest continuously-operating exhibition site in Europe. The modern company was incorporated in 1907 and the current grounds were largely redeveloped between 2001 and 2018, culminating in the opening of Hall 12 (built 2018, 33,600 m of column-free space across two floors, with 13 m ceiling clearance).
The hall portfolio
Halls 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 form the main exhibition complex around the central Agora public plaza. Hall 11 - rebuilt 2009 - has the highest single-storey ceiling clearance on the grounds at 12.5 m and is the venue of choice for double-deck stands at Light + Building and ISH. Hall 5 was completed in 2023 and brings updated rigging grid capacity (up to 1,000 kg per rigging point). Halls 1-4 form the "Galleria" axis with retail-style ground-floor frontages used for consumer-day events.
Signature events
Ambiente in February draws roughly 4,400 exhibitors and 130,000 buyers across consumer goods, dining, gifts and living. Light + Building (biennial March) is the worlds largest lighting and building-services fair. Heimtextil in January anchors the global home-textile industry. ISH (sanitary and HVAC, biennial) is the global leader in its sector. Automechanika every two years owns the automotive aftermarket calendar. The Frankfurt Book Fair in October remains the worlds most important publishing trade event.
Logistics for exhibitors
The venue has its own ICE rail station (Messe Frankfurt) and direct S-Bahn connection to Frankfurt Airport (8 minutes). Schenker operates as the appointed forwarder, with a dedicated customs warehouse and consolidated freight handling for international exhibitors. Build-up windows typically open 96 hours before doors. Power supplies up to 400 kVA per stand can be ordered through the Messeshop portal with 14 days lead time. Rigging above 3 m requires TUV-certified structural calculations submitted at least 21 days before build-up.
Exhibitor practicalities
On-site parking is paid (P2 and P3 multi-storey, plus surface parking around halls 8-11). Crew catering is centralised at the Galleria and Foyer Cafes. Hotels closest to the venue include the Maritim Hotel (literally on the grounds), the Mercure Frankfurt Messe, and the Movenpick Frankfurt City - book by Q4 of the previous year for major shows.
