Briefs now specify recycled aluminium content, FSC substrate and documented end-of-life pathways before they specify aesthetics — and builders without ISO 20121 or 14001 are increasingly excluded from tier-one tenders.
Three categories carry credible claims. Demand a material passport listing every component with its end-of-life pathway.
Done lazily, 10–20% more — premium materials cost more than commodity equivalents. Done strategically, reusable modular stands cost 30–45% less per fair from year two.
The break-even comes from reuse, not premium materials: a single-use FSC stand still has a higher footprint than a multi-use conventional one.
FAMAB benchmarks under 5 kg of landfill per m², versus 25–40 kg for one-time bespoke builds. Many venues now penalise builds over 10 kg per m².
Procurement teams do. The UFI Barometer reports 63% of European exhibitors received sustainability questions from buyers in 2025, up from 38% in 2022.
Only 15–25% of visitors at horizontal fairs read a stand for its credentials — 40–50% at sustainability-focused shows. The decisive shift is at the RFI stage.
Ask for four documents and walk away if any is missing. “Eco-friendly” without them is marketing copy.
